The History of the Garbarakshambigai Temple

The Garbarakshambigai Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located in Thirukarukavur, Tamil Nadu, India.
The temple is believed to have been built during the Cholas period in the 7th century. However, some sources suggest that construction first began on the Garbarakshambigai Temple in the third century BC by King Kulothunga Chola II.

This temple is one of the five Pancha Aranya Sthalams, representing the five forests where temples are located.

The presiding deity is revered in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the Nayanmars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.
